Clemente Screening of “Stonewall Uprising” – Tuesday July 31st @ 6 p.m.

The members of the 2018 Clemente summer course invite ALL the members of the Worcester Clemente Community including Trinity Lutheran Church to a screening and discussion of the documentary, “Stonewall Uprising,” this Tuesday, July 31 at 6 p.m. in Jeppson Hall.  Pizza will be provided.

This film is about a historic turning point in the gay rights movement in 1969 when police tried to shut down a gay bar and the patrons fought back.  Here’s how one person who was there remembers it:

“The drag queens, they’re the ones who said to the police, ‘We’re not leaving.’ And they formed a chorus line outside, in front of the bar. And they stood there, dancing in the street. They were all Puerto Rican drag queens and Irish cops. It was a funny, funny confrontation. Every time the police succeeded in dispersing the group, the drag queens would regroup, and starting dancing their way back toward the Stonewall.  When we came back on Saturday night, we stood there on the street and held hands and kissed — something we would never have done three days earlier I stood there with chills. I got a chill seeing guys on the street holding hands and kissing.”

In addition, a representative from Mass Humanities will be on hand to conduct interviews with members of the Clemente Worcester community that could be included in a future documentary about the Clemente program in Massachusetts.

PLEASE RSVP by emailing Lucia Knoles at [email protected] to let them know if you’ll be attending so they can be sure to order enough pizza.  And let them know if you might be interested in being interviewed so they can put you on the schedule.  All are welcome!
