Sunday, December 29 First Sunday of Christmas

Isaiah 63:7-9 Israel saved by God’s own presence
Hebrews 2:10-18 Christ shares flesh and blood to free humankind
Matthew 2:13-23 The slaughter of innocent children
Psalmody: Psalm 148 The splendor of the LORD is over earth and heaven. (Ps.148:13)

Hymn of the Day: Hymn 273, All My Heart Again Rejoices, WARUM SOLLT ICH

Christians know that Jesus was born to die for us; and thus in our worship the reality of death is never far from our celebrations of life in Christ. The gospel this Sunday is the horrific story of Herod killing all the young children of Bethlehem in hopes of eliminating Jesus from the scene. Come to worship: in the midst of death we praise God’s steadfast love, and we receive the blessings God gives.
