On Christmas Day, when the church celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, we hear the great poem in John 1. John pushes the existence of Christ far back before Bethlehem: Jesus Christ, the Word of God, is God from before the creation of the world. In the dark of winter in the northern hemisphere, we break forth into singing, for Christ is the light of the world.
